“Necessity, opportunity and community needs – The Mining sector’s role in the Just Energy Transition”
On Wednesday 4 August 2021, the High Commission of Canada in South Africa hosted a panel discussion where panelists from the energy and mining sector unpacked issues impacting Southern Africa’s transition to a low carbon future. The panel discussion was moderated by SACANCHAM’s CEO, Mike Morgan.
The panelists highlighted the vital role of the mining sector in the move to transition Southern Africa to a low-carbon future, not only as a consumer of energy but also as a miner of coal. The socio-economic imperatives to consider and balance are complex and the esteemed panelists unpacked and robustly debated the following issues:
- What are the socio-economic benefits of moving to cleaner energy production and cleaner mining – for both mines and communities?
- How do mines become “Greener”?
- What happens to coal mines and the communities surrounding them – a look at the “Just Energy Transition”
- How to finance the “Just Energy Transition”?
The discussion was followed by a Q & A session during which participants’ questions were answered.
