On the 18th August, SACANCHAM in partnership with the Swiss Chamber of Commerce had the privilege of hosting Mr Moeletsi Mbeki, courtesy of Citadel, at their offices in Sandton. Moeletsi addressed the topic “A tale of two nationalisms and how they have failed, and continue to fail South Africa” His well-researched facts and incisive analysis of South Africa’s economic and political history provided the opportunity to challenge the guests to consider an inclusive future for all South Africans. A vigorous Q&A session followed the address and in his inimitable style, Moeletsi responded robustly and constructively to the many complex questions from the floor. Six other business chambers participated in a very successful multi-lateral business event.

On 4 August 2022, Wayne Duvenage from the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) addressed us on “The Road to 2024 – What Needs to Happen for South Africa to Survive and Thrive?”  This event was hosted by our esteemed member, The Da Vinci Institute on Thursday the 4th of August at 15:00. It was a hybrid event and could be attended in person or via our live streaming facility.

Event description: An early celebration of Canada Day 2022. Invited guests braved the chilly conditions this afternoon to attend an event hosted by HE Chris Cooter High Commissioner of Canada to SA at his official residence. After a rendition of the national anthems of both SA and Canada and a brief address by HC Cooter, guests were treated to a variety of culinary delights. After two years of limited personal engagement, acquaintances were renewed and new friendships forged in a festive atmosphere.

Event description: “Harnessing the State Capture and Covid19 Pandemic Experiences to reset the South African Economy” with Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu – 7 April 2022. We were delighted that Prof Wiseman Nkuhlu, the Chairman of KPMG South Africa, Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, respected academic and influential business leader agreed to address us on this subject. Drawing on his vast experience in business and academia in South Africa, Prof Nkuhlu provided insights into how the experiences of state capture and the Covid 19 pandemic can be helpful in turning around the fortunes of our ailing economy.

The Centre for Risk Analysis’ highly anticipated 2022 Strategic Intelligence Briefing took place on 24 March 2022.  Dr John Endres, Director of The Centre for Risk Analysis addressed the subject “Towards South Africa’s Tipping Point” as he unpacked his insights into how various factors have impacted our current situation. The event was proudly hosted by our partner Citadel Investment Services Proprietary Limited.

We were delighted that Prof Bonang Mohale, the President of Business Unity South Africa, Chairman of Bidvest and highly acclaimed author of the recently released book, Behold the Turtle, agreed to address us on the subject, Imagining a revitalised South Africa…Yes we can… Drawing on his vast experience in business in South Africa, Bonang unpacked the SONA and provided insights into how the President’s plans need to be implemented to change the fortunes of South Africa. The event was hosted by Norton Rose Fulbright.

SACANCHAM’s final board meeting for 2021 was hosted at the official residence of the High Commissioner of Canada to South Africa, HE Chris Cooter. The meeting was followed by a lunch attended by leaders from the private and public sector including Deputy Minister Kekana. Guests were able to interact in a relaxed environment and many new friendships were made.

Delivering concluding remarks, the Chairman of SACANCHAM, Greg Nott thanked the High Commissioner for his gracious hospitality and acknowledged the strong spirit of collaboration between SACANCHAM and the High Commission.
